Intellectual Property Law Resource Collection

General Sciences Library
69 Ly Tu Trong Street, District 1
Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

The U.S.-Vietnam Trade Council Education Forum is working with representatives of the international trade community (including the U.S. Consulate, American legal practitioners, the Vietnamese legal community and businesses) to set up a public library containing resources and references on intellectual property rights law.   This project aims at building the capacity of local lawyers, judges, law students, and business people so that they may be better able to address specific IPR issues arising from Vietnam ’s economic integration.  It is our hope that resources collected out of this project could then be applied to developing an IPR module for the WTO ITL Curriculum mentioned above.

The following activities have been conducted thus far:

«  IPR Reference Collection: 2004 Seminar Series on Copyright Protection in Vietnam, 21 December 2004

«  USVTC/HCMC General Sciences Library IPR Seminar Series: "Trademark Protection" and  "Copyright Workshop for Librarians", August 12, 2004

«  Launch of IPR Seminar Series.  Ho Chi Minh City, April 2004

«  Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Culture & Information, November 2003

How You Can Contribute - Donate or Sponsor A Book!!

With the guidance of many IP experts and academics from around the world, the U.S.-Vietnam Trade Council has developed a list of books that we feel should be included in this resource center.  We are now seeking support and in-kind contributions from businesses and organizations around the world to fund the purchase of these books.

If you are interested in sponsoring the purchase of one or more books for this collection , we welcome and thank you for your donation (tax-deductible for US tax purposes).    Please let us know how you would like your name, or the name of your company or organization, to appear in the book, on the plaque, and when shared with our Vietnamese counterparts.  Our staff members in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi and Washington, DC, are all more than happy to assist you at any time.  All sponsoring organizations will be duly recognized on a plaque next to the reference collection and in the book(s) you sponsor.

Why IPR?

Protection of intellectual property rights is an important chapter in the U.S. Vietnam Bilateral Trade Agreement and will also be important in Vietnam’s efforts to join the World Trade Organization (WTO).   A business environment with a strong regime for the protection of intellectual property rights serves to attract inward foreign investment and assist in the development of a vibrant domestic industry while encouraging research & development and innovation.   For American companies in Vietnam and Vietnamese companies operating overseas, strong IPR protection and enforcement is vital for brand protection and continuing investment in R&D.

To address the lack of information, resources and understanding about intellectual property rights in Vietnam, the U.S.-Vietnam Trade Council looks forward to the establishment of a resource center for IPR Law in Vietnam's business hub.  A section of the General Sciences Library in Ho Chi Minh City will be allocated and maintained specifically for books, journals, laws and other resources on intellectual property rights, protection and enforcement.
